Topic: Help-Seeking
Instructions:
For these next set of items, please think about academic help (e.g., in your courses, research, etc.) in school.
Response Options:
1-Not at all true to 5-Completely true
Items:
Help-Seeking Threat
- I would feel like a failure if I needed help.
- I would not want anyone to find out that I needed help.
- Getting help in would be an admission that I am just not smart enough to do work on my own.
Help-Seeking Avoidance
- If I didn’t understand something, I would guess rather than ask someone for assistance.
- Even if the work was too hard to do on my own, I wouldn't ask for help.
- I would rather do worse on a project I couldn't finish then ask for help.
Formal vs. Informal Help-Seeking
- If I were to seek help, I would ask a faculty member rather than another student.
- I would prefer asking another student for help than a faculty member. (*R)
- Faculty would be better to get help from than would another student.
