All interested instructional faculty (Senate and Unit 18) with support from their department chair are eligible to apply.

Expectations

A selection committee will be formed to review all applications and select a cohort to develop Global Classrooms for AY 2022-23.

Faculty awardees will be expected to submit a request for course approval for their Global Classroom course to the Senate Committee on Courses of Instruction (CCI) according to published deadlines, typically on or around the 1st of February for fall courses, October for winter courses, and January for spring courses.

Global Classroom courses should be offered in at least three of the next five years by the originator, or another faculty member who is appointed to teach the same course.

Benefits

UCSC faculty awardees will be provided the following:

  • A three-week professional development training workshop on VE/COIL in fall 2021 * 
  • Regular cohort progress/peer support meetings throughout winter & spring 2022 **
  • Pedagogical and technical support during the training and curriculum development
  • $4,000 in summer compensation, upon completion of the Global Classroom curriculum development

* The overall time commitment for this workshop is approximately 20 hours over the three-week period. International teaching partners are also welcomed and encouraged to attend this workshop alongside the UCSC faculty, but will be responsible for covering their own registration cost. If this is of interest, please inquire for details.

** Regular cohort meetings of 1 to 1.5 hours will be scheduled every 2 to 3 weeks, or as needed.

Application Guidelines

Applications should include:

1) Statement of Interest

In no more than two pages, provide responses to the following prompts and append your course syllabus:

  1. Quarter offered: The quarter the course will be offered in the 2022-23 academic year, and include the frequency of offerings and average enrollment. 
  2. Teaching partner: A brief profile of your identified teaching partner and their institution. Please explain how you will leverage this connection and the virtual environment to engage and challenge students.
  3. Partner course: A brief description of your teaching partner’s course (or append a syllabus, if available). Explain how your course and your teaching partner’s course are good candidates for adapting to a Global Classroom environment and how the intersection of content and collaborative learning will provide students with an international experience. 
  4. Additional information: Particular experience or qualifications you or your teaching partner and institution may have that is relevant to developing or teaching a Global Classroom.

A clear commitment from your teaching partner as well as their institution is vital for a successful Global Classroom project. It is recommended that you contact your prospective teaching partner as soon as possible to discuss project feasibility and to provide an overview of the expected timeline and commitment.

 

Completed applications should be submitted by Friday, May 21st, 5 p.m. to global@ucsc.edu copying your unit head (department or program chair, college provost).
