Course Syllabus
Office hours & sections
A list of office hours, contact email, and sections (including rooms) is available online.
Syllabus
There is an official course syllabus that you may download. The syllabus will not be distributed in hardcopy in class. Please read the syllabus before doing anything else for the class.
Personal Responsibility
All students must sign a Personal Responsibility Document, setting out expectations for the class for students and course staff. A signed copy of this document must be submitted for Assignment 0; anyone who doesn't submit a signed document by the due date will receive a failing grade for the class.
Enrollment & first week
IMPORTANT: If you don't show up to the first class, you will be administratively dropped. If you have an illness or unplanned personal emergency that prevents you from attending class, you must notify the instructor in advance of the class by email or text message, and then provide documentation of the illness or emergency (doctor's note, funeral notice) at the first class you attend. Late return to campus from summer vacation is not a valid excuse unless it's due to an unforeseen situation beyond your control.
Permission codes
If you need a permission code, you must get one in person during office hours. I'll ask you about your background to ensure that you have sufficient knowledge to succeed in the class, and then give you a permission code on the spot.
Priority for enrollment in this class is given to undergraduates. While this class may be used to fulfill graduate requirements, it is required for most computer science and computer engineering undergrads, so they get priority. To facilitate this, I will not give out permission codes to allow graduate students to enroll until the first week of classes.
Disability accommodation
UC Santa Cruz is committed to creating an academic environment that supports its diverse student body. If you are a student with a disability who requires accommodations to achieve equal access in this course, please submit your Accommodation Authorization Letter from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) to Prof. Miller privately during office hours. If you cannot attend any office hours due to an academic conflict (another course or section), you may make an appointment. You must meet within the first three weeks of the quarter. All students who may benefit from learning more about DRC services are encouraged to contact the DRC by phone at 831-459-2089 or by email at drc@ucsc.edu.
