Paper writing - Pick 3, check related work
- Due Oct 2, 2019 by 5:20pm
- Points 10
- Submitting a text entry box
1) Pick a paper you might want to present
- Check the extended class syllabus for a list
- Just go read abstracts and watch videos of several until something catches your interest
- You might want to verify if there is a good video since it will make your task much easier. (This isnt required, since you can usually duplicate this with a short presentation that is all the figures from the paper)
- Submit the paper name (we'll sort out scheduling later)
2) Choose possible projects
- Check the extended class syllabus for a list
- Read through all the projects (I'm sure you have questions, thats ok)
- Choose at least 3 projects that might be of interest to you to work on
- Submit the list of possible projects
3) Related work checking
- For each project, find at least 2 possibly related papers
- Google Scholar is your friend (but there are many other ways to search for papers as well)
- You only need to read the abstract and look at results figures to get a feel for a paper
- You are looking specifically for papers that would invalidate the novelty claim or contribution claim of the proposed projects. We can't write a paper about what someone already wrote. However we might be able to twist around our contribution to avoid theirs. This initial survey is an important part of the research process to avoid doing tons of work on something that was already done 20 years ago.
- Submit your list of related work (organized by possible paper), with a sentence or two explaining if they invalidate the claim, what they do, or if they are similar or use the same method but turned out not to invalidate the paper.
- We'll talk about these in class. Bring yours to next class also, so we can discuss some.
