Read and respond to (at least the first 14 pages of) http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tom7/mario/mario.pdf Links to an external site.

Rather than reading about the results in the paper, enjoy a visual presentation with commentary in Tom7's videos: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~tom7/mario/ Links to an external site.

Note: This paper was presented at SIGBOVIK (http://sigbovik.org/ Links to an external site.), a conference for serious-looking papers that are actually jokes and joke-looking papers that are actually serious. Most of the papers are jokes, but this one is actually a very interesting approach to learning gameplay behavior from human demonstration.
