Can annotations be exported?
Annotations can be exported! Supported file types include: JSON, plain text, CSV, or HTML.
By exporting annotations as JSON files, teachers can save and later import their model annotations, making it easy to reuse them in future courses for consistency and efficiency.
Here's the Hypothesis guide on Exporting and Importing Annotations Links to an external site..
Is there version history for edits?
No. Hypothesis doesn't maintain any version control on annotations, so there's no way to retrieve what was posted prior to an edit.
What timezone does the time stamp refer to?
Hypothesis uses the UTC standard, which is what gets reported back to the browser. Then, depending on the local setting of the browser, the UTC time is converted to local time. This means that any timestamps are based on the UTC time that the annotations are saved to Hypothesis' database, and wouldn't be affected by Canvas or the student's local computer.
Can I use Hypothesis outside of Canvas?
Yes, Hypothesis can be used outside of Canvas to annotate webpages or PDFs (including locally saved PDFs!)
There are only two requirements:
- Sign up for a Hypothesis account (using Hypothesis in Canvas does not create a Hypothesis account)
- Install the Hypothesis extension on Chrome or Firefox (these are currently the only supported browsers)
Once you've done both of those, you can start annotating on any website or PDF. For more instructions, visit the Getting Started page. If you're annotating locally saved PDFs, visit this Hypothesis guide about annotating Locally-Saved PDFs.
If I use Hypothesis in Canvas, does that mean I have a Hypothesis account?
No. When you use Hypothesis through Canvas, Hypothesis doesn't know your associated email account, only your Canvas username. If you want to start using Hypothesis outside of Canvas, you need to create a Hypothesis account. Visit the Getting Started page.
Why does Hypothesis ask me to authorize when loading an assignment?
This is the Hypothesis tool just confirming your account before loading the tool. It is expected behavior. You'll be asked to do it when you first load the Hypothesis tool, anytime after clearing your cache, or accessing from a new browser or computer.
